Monthly Discussion Meeting

Rainbow Seniors of Berkshire County holds a monthly discussion meeting, that is often topic based. Past themes have include talks about Asexuality, Assimilation of the LGBTQ Community, Poetry, LGBTQ authors, an interactive art project, interactive relaxation and stress relief exercise, Growing Up LGBTQ and much more. While topics are the theme of our meeting we also sojourn down various conversational pathways as we talk, often leading to truly enjoyable and thoughtful conversations.

Our monthly discussion meetings take place on the first Saturday of each month at the Berkshire Athenaeum from 2 to 4 PM in the 2nd floor conference room at 1 Wendell Avenue, unless otherwise noted.

2019 Meeting Dates:

Saturday, April 6th, 2019: In lieu of our usual meeting Rainbow Seniors of Berkshire County will be attending the 6th Annual Live Out Loud LGBTQIA+ Conference. For more info, go here- https://liveoutloudberkshires.org/

Saturday May 4th, 2019: In lieu of our usual meeting Rainbow Seniors of Berkshire County will be attending the Northampton Pride parade and festivities. Saturday the 11th of May we will be holding our regular meeting, just on a different day. We will be leaving the Berkshires at 9 am, parking in downtown Northampton for the 11 am parade start and then heading over to the pride festival until 5 pm.

Saturday, May 11th, 2019: STUCK RUBBER BABY: What Was I Thinking??!”

At the May 11 meeting in Pittsfield, Rainbow Seniors member Howard Cruse will return with another slideshow presentation about his work. This time the subject will be his 1995 graphic novel Stuck Rubber Baby, which will be re-issued next year in a re-packaged 25th anniversary edition.

Since its publication, Howard’s book has won Eisner and Harvey Awards in the U.S., a Comics Creators Award in the U.K., a Luchs Award in Germany, a 2007 Saló del Còmic de Barcelona Award in Spain, and a 2002 Prix de la critique at the Angouleme International Comics Festival in France. The Comics Journal cited Stuck Rubber Baby as being among the “100 Best Comics of the [20th] Century.”

Howard’s slideshow will focus on the thought processes that went into his book’s creation. After the presentation Howard will respond to any questions or comments offered by the members present.

Saturday, June 1st, 2019: Celebrating Pride: Then and Now

Looking back at the history of pride, what it meant to our community then and what it means now, how it’s changed and what it means to us personally.

Saturday, July 6th, 2019: Drag Bingo with Boxxa Vine

We will be hosting local drag artist Boxxa Vine with her fun twist on traditional bingo. There will be refreshments and prizes provided by Rainbow Seniors.

Saturday, August 3rd, 2019: LGBTQIA+ Representation in the Media

Our August meeting will entail a screening of the Celluloid Closet and a discussion of LGBTQIA+ Representation in the Media. We will be showing the film in the athenaeum room on a large screen HDTV with surround sound.

Saturday, September 7th, 2019: The Poetry of Our Lives, Session 2

A reading and sharing of our favorite poets and our own poetry.

Saturday, October 5th, 2019: The LGBTQ Community and Mental Health

A discussion of being LGBTQIA+ and the unique mental health needs of our community. We will also discuss ways we can and do foster resiliency as a community and individually.

Saturday, November 2nd, 2019: The Varied Experience of Gender and Sex

In honor of trans awareness month we will be hosting a film Screening of Gender Revolution followed by open discussion. See trailer here.

Saturday December 7th, 2019: Living in the Age of Undetectable

A educational discussion about sexuality as we age, including safe sex and topics such as PEP/PREP and the changes that our community has seen from the age of sexual liberation to the HIV/AIDS epidemic to the age of undetectable HIV+ we are currently living in.
